Welcome to our Children's Book Class! This two-semester course ignites creativity as you learn to craft, refine, and publish captivating illustrated picture books. Dive into immersive writing workshops, explore the lives of esteemed children's book authors, and join a vibrant community that champions your success.

 

Plus, upon completion, every student receives a fully illustrated, bound children's book—a tangible testament to your artistic prowess. Join us and bring your storytelling dreams to life!

About This Class

The Children's Book Class is meticulously crafted to nurture and empower aspiring writers residing in Southern California who harbor a passion for crafting captivating illustrated picture books. This comprehensive two-semester journey is designed to equip participants with the tools and guidance necessary to conceptualize, refine, and publish their imaginative stories.

Classes start on Wed, April 24, 2024, and are held once a week on Wednesday from 6 PM PST to 9 PM PST via Zoom. The price of the class is $330/month.

This class is tailored for writers of all levels, whether seasoned wordsmiths seeking to embark on a new literary venture or budding storytellers eager to explore the realm of children's literature. It welcomes individuals who are dedicated to honing their craft and unleashing their creativity within the enchanting world of children's books.

The Children's Book Class is a transformative experience that delves into the intricacies of writing, editing, and publishing illustrated picture books. Through a dynamic curriculum, participants embark on a journey of self-discovery and artistic exploration, guided by an experienced instructor who is passionate about fostering literary excellence. 

 

Goal:

The primary goal of this course is to empower participants to actualize their storytelling aspirations and bring their imaginative narratives to life. By immersing themselves in a supportive writing workshop environment and delving into the biographies of esteemed children's book authors, students gain invaluable insights and inspiration to fuel their creative endeavors.

  • Writing Workshop: Engage in hands-on writing exercises and constructive feedback sessions to refine storytelling techniques and develop compelling narratives.

  • Author Biographies Study: Explore the lives and works of renowned children's bookwriters, drawing inspiration from their journeys and literary accomplishments.

Charisse Sims is an award-winning Parent Podcaster; a recognized and awarded Educator by PBS and PBS Kids; a children’s book author of Say Their Names, a mindfulness book that empowers parents and children around social and racial injustices, and a Nationally recognized speaker and trainer. Charisse Sims is a passionate advocate for youth literacy and educational opportunities. For over a decade she has worked to create access to resources and empower young people with creative spaces and a platform to express their voices. In her work at the Sims Library of Poetry, Charisse strives to build bridges between educators and students through her children’s book publishing class where educators write and publish culturally relevant books to add diversity and representation to children’s bookshelves. She believes in the power of the written word to connect diverse audiences with multifaceted messages. Through this work, she has left an indelible mark on hundreds of kids’ lives. Charisse’s determination and drive to ensure every child has access to the same learning opportunities exemplify true passion and dedication. She is an inspirational leader and an invaluable asset to the education community, making a meaningful difference for the students she serves.
